Jane Addams and the Progressive Movement Essay -- Jane Addams Feminism
Jane Addams and the Progressive Movement Works Cited Not Included Jane Addams is recognized as a social and political pioneer for women in America. In her biography, which later revealed her experiences in Hull House, she demonstrates her altruistic personality, which nurtured the poor and pushed for social reforms. Although many of Addams ideas were considered radical for her time, she provided women with a socially acceptable way to participate in both political and social change. She defied the prototypical middle class women by integrating the line that separated private and political life. Within these walls of the settlement house, Addams redefined the idea of ?separate spheres,? and with relentless determination, she separated herself from the domestic chores that woman were confined to during the later half of the nineteenth century which led to the twentieth one. During the late nineteenth century, the notion of ?separate spheres? dictated that the women?s world was limited to the home, taking care of domestic concerns. Women were considered to be in the private sphere of society. Men on the other hand were assigned the role of the public sphere, consisting in the participation of politics, law and economics. Women in the meantime were to preserve religious and moral ideals within the home, placing children on the proper path while applying valuable influence on men. The idea was that the typical middle class woman would teach children middle class values so that they too will enjoy the luxuries and benefits in the future that the middle class has to offer (Lecture, 10/17). One can argue that Jane Addams did comply with the ideal middle class women, that she remained in ?her sphere? of society. This can mos... ...the stereotypical idea of the man as the provider and leader of the typical home, women were free to run their lives as they felt, and not as society entailed them to do. It provided women experience in life that reached over to the public realm. The ?separate spheres? did not exist in Addams world; her progressive stance enabled many workers to benefit. Addams envisioned a world that did not discriminate based on one?s gender, and her commitment into the ?public realm? had tremendous impact. Child labor ceased, women won the eight-hour workday, and everyone enjoyed more benefits and improved working conditions. Jane Addams established the path for future women to take as well, which led to women?s suffrage, and eventually equal pay and mutual respect. She was not your typical middle class woman; she was a reformer that changed the way America functioned forever.

Dear son I feel very good that you are seeking help of your parents .Being a mother I feel that you should try to keep your professional life a better one and not to reveal any information about the company and the policies to any of the customers as the information and the things of business are very sensitive and may cause a great harm if the person you are sharing with is not loyal. According to me you should have read the policies and the contract before signing any of the document and you should try to avoid such a mistake again in life. With regard to this I must say you should try to consult a lawyer or any lawà suit if you find any problem with the Jim. And if you feel that Jim is not doing well and is not standing on the contract made then you should try to avoid revealing secretive information to any of the person and should read the policies and make a suitable contract with only trust worthy person and if you feel like you are cheated or any kind of loss has happened then you must sue or file a case against that person. But the ethics and the last things that comes to my mind is the ethic of honesty and a reliability. You should try to avoid such mistakes in future so that your hard work will become fruitful and you will become a successful business personality.

Down and Out in Paris and London Study Guide
Down and Out in Paris and London is the first full-length work by English novelist, essayist, and journalist George Orwell. Published in 1933, the novel is a combination of fiction and factual autobiography in which Orwell describes and partially-fictionalizes his experiences of poverty. Through the observations on social injustice articulated in Down and Out, Orwell set the stage for his later major works of political observation and criticism: the allegorical novella Animal Farm and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Fast Facts: Down and Out in Paris and London Author:à George OrwellPublisher:à Victor Gollancz (London)Year Published:à 1933Genre:à Memoir/AutobiographicalSetting:à The late 1920s inà Paris and LondonType of Work:à NovelOriginal language:à EnglishMajor Themes:à Poverty and societys treatment of the poorMain Characters:à An unnamed narrator, Boris, Paddy Jacques, The Patron, Valenti, Bozo Summary of Plot Down and Out in Paris and London begins as the storyââ¬â¢s unnamed narrator, a British man in his early twenties, is living in the Latin Quarter of Paris during 1928. In keeping with the novelââ¬â¢s main theme of poverty, the narratorà finds himself nearly out of funds after being robbed by one of his many eccentric neighbors. After briefly working as an English teacher and a restaurant plongeur (pot-washer), the narrator finds that he must pawnà his clothes and other belongings to avoid starvation. Sensing that the stress of the daily struggle to survive without regular income might be affecting his mental and physical health, the narrator reaches out to an old friend back in his hometown of London. When his friend sends him money to get his clothes out of hock and help him find a job, the narrator decides to leave Paris and move back to London. The year is 1929, and the Americanà Great Depression is just beginning to hurt economies around the world. Once back in London, the narrator works briefly as a caregiver for an invalid. When his patient leaves England, the narrator is forced to live on the streets or in Salvation Army charity hostels. Due to vagrancy laws of the day, he must remain on the move, spending his days as a beggar in search of free housing, soup kitchens, and handouts. As he wanders London, the narratorsà interactions with fellow beggars as well as charitable (and not so charitable) individuals and institutions give him a newfound understanding of the struggles of people living on the margins.à à Major Characters The Narrator:à The unnamed narrator is a struggling writer and part-time English tutor in his early twenties. He works at several menial jobs in Paris before accepting the charity of a friend and moving back to his hometown of London, where he looks for work but remains largely unemployed. Through his daily efforts to scrape up food and housing, the narrator comes to appreciate the constant humiliations of poverty. Unlike many of the characters he encounters, the narrator is a well-educated English aristocrat. He ultimately concludes and societal norms prevent the poor from breaking free of the cycle of poverty.à Boris:à The narratorsà close friend and roommate in Paris, Boris is a former Russian soldier in his mid-thirties. Once the picture of health and virility, Boris has become obese and partially crippled by arthritis. Despite his disabling pain, Boris is a perpetual optimist who helps the narrator plot schemes to escape their poverty. Borisââ¬â¢ plans eventually succeed in finding work for two of them at Hotel X and later at the Auberge de Jehan Cottard restaurant. After the narrator has returned to Paris, he learns that Boris had achieved his often-expressed lifelong dreams of earning 100 francs a day waiting tables and moving in with a woman ââ¬Å"who never smells of garlic.â⬠à à Valenti: A kind, good-looking 24-year-old waiter, Valenti worked with the narratorà at Hotel X in Paris. The narrator admired Valenti for being one of his only acquaintances who had succeeded at working his way out of poverty. Valenti knew that only hard work could break the chains of poverty. Ironically, Valenti had learned this lesson when on the verge of starvation, he prayed to what he believed to the picture of a saint for food and money. His prayers, however, had gone unanswered because the picture turned out to be that of a local prostitute. Mario: Another of the narratorsà co-workers at Hotel X, Mario has been working as a waiter for 14 years. An outgoing and expressive Italian, Mario is an expert at his job, often singing arias from then opera ââ¬Å"Rigolettoâ⬠as he works in order to increase his tips. Unlike most of the other characters the narrator encounters on the streets of Paris, Mario is the epitome of resourcefulness or ââ¬Å"dà ©brouillard.â⬠The Patron: The owner of the Auberge de Jehan Cottard restaurant where the narrator and Boris work, the Patron is a pudgy, well dressed Russian man who uses far too much cologne for the narrators taste. The Patron bores the narrator with stories of golf and how his work as a restaurateur prevents him from playing the game he loves. The narrator, however, sees that the Patronââ¬â¢s real game and main occupation is cheating people. He tricks the narrator and Boris into remodeling his restaurant for free by lying to them about the constantly-impending opening date.à à Paddy Jacques: After the narratorà moves back to London, his first stay in a free hostel unites him with Paddy Jacques, an Irishman who knows the ins-and-outs of the cityââ¬â¢s charitable facilities. Though he feels shame about it, Paddy Jacques has become an expert at begging and is eager to share whatever food and money he gets. Given Paddy Jacquesââ¬â¢ determination to avoid education, the narrator views him as a prototypical laborer whose inability to find steady work has doomed him to poverty. Bozo: Crippled while working as a house painter, Paddy Jacquesââ¬â¢s best friend Bozo now survives by drawing art on the streets and sidewalks of London in return for handouts. Despite being broken both financially and physically, Bozo never surrenders to self-pity. As a dedicated atheist, Bozo refuses all forms of religious charity and never hesitates to express his views on art, astrology, and politics. The narratorà admires Bozoââ¬â¢s refusal to allow poverty to change his uniquely independent personality. Main Themes The Inescapability of Poverty:à Mostà of the people the narrator encounters truly want to escape poverty and work hard trying to do so, but constantly fail due to events and circumstances beyond their control. The novel argues that the poor are victims of circumstance and society. Appreciation for the ââ¬ËWorkââ¬â¢ of Poverty: While observing the daily lives of London street dwellers, the narrator concludes thatà beggars and working men toil in much the same way, and that beggars work in worse circumstances and often with their very survival at stake. The fact that their performances or goods have no value should make no difference because, as the narrator suggests, neither does the work of many regular businessmen, who [are distinguished by] their incomes and nothing else, and the average millionaire is only the average dishwasher dressed in a new suit.â⬠The ââ¬ËFreedomââ¬â¢ of Poverty: Despite the many evils of poverty, the narrator concludes that poverty does afford its victims a certain degree of freedom. Specifically, the book contends that the poor are free from worrying about respectability. This conclusion is drawn from the narrators many encounters with eccentric individuals on the streets of Paris and London. The narrator writes, Poverty frees them from ordinary standards of behavior, just as money frees people from work.â⬠Literary Style Down and Out in Paris and London is an autobiographical memoir combining factual events with literary embellishment and social commentary. While the genre of book is mainly non-fiction, Orwell applies the fiction writerââ¬â¢s techniques of exaggerating events and rearranging their chronological order in an effort to make the narrative more compelling. In the introduction to the French version published in 1935, Orwell wrote, ââ¬Å"I think I can say that I have exaggerated nothing except in so far as all writers exaggerate by selecting. I did not feel that I had to describe events in the exact order in which they happened, but everything I have described did take place at one time or another.â⬠As a depiction of what it was like to be poverty-stricken in France and England before the implementation of post-World War I welfare programs, the book is widely considered as a classic example of the semi-historical documentary with a clearly-identifiable point of view. Historical Context Orwell was part of theà Lost Generation, a group of young expatriate writers attracted to Paris during the 1920s by the cityââ¬â¢s Bohemian atmosphere of personal freedom and artistic creativity. Examples of their best-known novels includeà The Sun Also Risesà byà Ernest Hemingwayà andà The Great Gatsbyà byà F. Scott Fitzgerald. The events in Down and Out inà Paris and London take place shortly after the end of the ââ¬Å"Roaring Twentiesâ⬠following World War I. Famously depicted in literature by the Lost Generation writers, this euphoric period of financial prosperity and excessive self-indulgence soon gave way to dismal poverty as the effects of Americaââ¬â¢s Great Depression spread to Europe. By the time he started to write the novel in 1927, 20% of the population of the United Kingdom was unemployed. Key Quotes Though they were written more than 85 years ago, many of Orwells insights about poverty and social injustice still ring true today. ââ¬Å"The evil of poverty is not so much that it makes a man suffer as that it rots him physically and spiritually.â⬠ââ¬Å"It is curious how people take it for granted that they have a right to preach at you and pray over you as soon as your income falls below a certain level.â⬠It is worth saying something about the social position of beggars, for when one has consorted with them, and found that they are ordinary human beings, one cannot help being struck by the curious attitude that society takes towards them.â⬠ââ¬Å"For, when you are approaching poverty, you make one discovery which outweighs some of the others. You discover boredom and mean complications and the beginnings of hunger, but you also discover the great redeeming feature of poverty: the fact that it annihilates the future. Within certain limits, it is actually true that the less money you have, the less you worry.ââ¬

Bruhathkayosaurus - Facts and Figures
Name: Bruhathkayosaurus (Greek for huge-bodied lizard); pronounced broo-HATH-kay-oh-SORE-us Habitat: Woodlands of India Historical Period: Late Cretaceous (70 million years ago) Size and Weight: Up to 150 feet long and 200 tons, if it really existed Diet: Plants Distinguishing Characteristics: Enormous size; long neck and tail About Bruhathkayosaurus Bruhathkayosaurus is one of those dinosaurs that comes with a lot of asterisks attached. When the remains of this animal were discovered in India, in the late 1980s, paleontologists thought they were dealing with an enormous theropod along the lines of the ten-ton Spinosaurus of northern Africa. On further examination, though, the discoverers of the type fossil speculated that Bruhathkayosaurus was actually a titanosaur, the huge, armored descendants of the sauropods that roamed every continent on earth during the Cretaceous period. The trouble is, though, that the pieces of Bruthathkayosaurus that have been identified so far dont convincingly add up to a complete titanosaur; its only classified as one because of its enormous size. For example, the supposed tibia (leg bone) of Bruhathkayosaurus was almost 30 percent bigger than that of the much-better-attestedà Argentinosaurus, meaning that if it really was a titanosaur it would have been by far the biggest dinosaur of all time--as much as 150 feet long from head to tail and 200 tons. Theres a further complication, which is that the provenance of the type specimen of Bruhathkayosaurus is dubious at best. The team of researchers that unearthed this dinosaur left out some important details in their 1989 paper; for example, they included line drawings, but not actual photographs, of the recovered bones, and also didnt bother to point out any detailed diagnostic characteristics that would attest to Bruhathkayosaurus truly being a titanosaur. In fact, in the absence of hard evidence, some paleontologists believe that the alleged bones of Bruhathkayosaurus are actually pieces of petrified wood! For now, pending further fossil discoveries, Bruhathkayosaurus languishes in limbo, not quite a titanosaur and not quite the largest land-dwelling animal that ever lived. This isnt an unusual fate for recently discovered titanosaurs; pretty much the same can be said about Amphicoelias and Dreadnoughtus, two other violently disputed contenders for the title of Biggest Dinosaur Ever.

A business organization must have the ability to utilize and manage the diversity within the organization in an effective manner. Thus, diversity management might be defined as the initiatives undertaken by the business concern in order to include the total number of the employees of the concern in all the programs and the social networks that exist within the organization. The employees must be supportive of the principles that are employed in the management of the diversity in the concerned organization. The employees must respect each other irrespective of the similarities and the differences on the basis of the views, backgrounds and styles that exist between them. The employees must participate fully in the efforts made by the concerned organization in order to promote the greater organizational efficiency and effectiveness through the implementation of the principles that are employed in the management of the diversity within an organization (Lauring, 2013). The current environment of the United States reveal that there are lesser distinctions that are based on the race or the gender of an employee. It is often noticed that the firms do not share the actual diversity data of their employees. According to the surveys that were conducted all over the country, there were twelve companies of Fortune 500 that had appeared on the list of the 50 Best Workplace For Diversity. This survey had pointed out the fact that the employees of these organizations felt comfortable at their workplace and as a result rated their respective employers highly on the grounds of morale, favoritism, feeling of inclusion and representation (Fortune.com, 2017). Goals and Measures of the diversity plan Goal 1 Recruitment of the diverse employees at all the levels. Outcome Measure Diversity in the hiring system would prove beneficial for the concerned company as well as be in accordance to the laws of the state. Goal 2 The development and the retention of the employees of the diverse backgrounds through the promotion of the environment that respects the existing differences. Outcome Measures The retention rate of the concerned organization would compare favorably with the external rates of retention. The results of the employee satisfaction survey would prove to be favorable for the total workforce of the concerned organization. Goal 3 The increment of the diversity in the senior and the managerial employees of the concerned organization. Outcome Measures The consistency with the applicable laws are maintained in following this goal. This would also lead to the representation of the women and the minorities in the senior and the managerial positions of the concerned organization. 3.I had faced a similar situation of the diversity conflict in my workplace. There had been a situation between two of my subordinates regarding the issue of their genders and their placements in the organizational hierarchy. The issue grew out of proportion when an announcement regarding the upcoming vacancy was declared within the organization. This was an internal promotional issue. The nomination list of the members included both the subordinates of mine. Thus, the issues between them increased ten-fold and it became necessary for me to intervene in the matter in order to resolve the issue. The male subordinate of mine nurtured the view that the managerial position against which the vacancy had been declared should be offered to him. He felt that the female colleague of his should not be promoted to the managerial position as she could not do justice to the role due to the fact that she was a female member of the organization and could not establish her authority over the other m ale subordinate members. I had to intervene in this matter and to resolve the issue I had arranged for a meeting with both of them regarding the issue. I had a discussion with both the conflicting parties and involved a representative in the meeting as well. In this case, the male member involved in the conflict was blinded by the gender difference that existed between him and his female colleague. This kind of situations may be avoided by implementing a mandatory hiring test that the candidates need to take before they can qualify to be interviewed by the officials of the human resource team of the company. The results of these tests should be completely devoid of any kind of bias that may exist within the recruiting members of the organization. The performance of the employees should be rated annually so as to ensure that the decisions of the managers regarding the pay and the promotion of their subordinate employees are unbiased and fair (Dobbin Kalev, 2016). The best employees of the organization must be identified and rewarded on the basis of their performance in the organization. The diversity in the organization must be promoted and there should not be any bias among the employees of the organization on the basis of their race, c aste, creed, sex or gender. The play begins in Italy with an ancient feud between two families Essay Example For Students
The play begins in Italy with an ancient feud between two families Essay The play begins in Italy with an ancient feud between two families. We know this because the prologue says, From ancient grudge The quarrelling is between the two families the Montagues and the Capulets. The prologue does not state what the argument is about but we do know it has also been going on for years. I think that there are several causes of violence amongst the Montagues and the Capulates. One of the causes is Tybalt Prince of cats, the older generation are encouraging and fuelling the argument as well as financing the war. Maybe it is just the younger generation who are bored and immature with not a lot else to do expect fight each other as they were brought up to do so. Or does Mercutio share the blame along with Tybalt for being the main perpetrators of violence and encouraging others to do so? There could quite possibly be role models for the other Capulets and Montagues and a good source of inspiration. We will write a custom essay on The play begins in Italy with an ancient feud between two families specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Im now going to discuss Tybalt and Mercutio their excitability and their anger. Tybalt is aggressive and has a very short temper, and knows little of how to control it and is always spoiling for a fight. For example in the Capulets house party : Tybalt: This, by his voice, should be a Montague fetch me my rapier boy. Act 1 scene 5 This is very often his way of anger thinking and he will do anything to have a fight with anyone. Another example of his anger and aggressiveness would be when he is talking to the Montagues in Act 1 Scene 1, when he says he hates peace which means he must want chaos. Tybalt: What drawn and talk of peace? I hate the word. And I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee. Act 1 Scene 1 He say this to the crowd of Montagues. It sounds like he is very influenced by the older generation. Mercutio is Tybalts equivalent in the clan . He does provoke him and he does know that Tybalt has a short fuse: Mercutio: I will not budge for no mans pleasure, I. This is said in an aggressive way to try and provoke Tybalt. Mercutio also does really enjoy letting his mouth run away and says what is on his mind. His mouth is almost as an affective weapon as a sword, with short sharp insults you rat catcher, will you walk? so he challenges with an insult. I sometime get the feeling in various course of the play he is a bit bitter about love and we may be correct in speculating that he has had his heart broken by a girl in the past. I think that the older generation are most to blame for what goes on. Because although they can not do any fighting themselves as they are reminded by their wives : Lady Capulet: A crutch, a crutch!à Why call you for a sword. Act 1 Scene 1 However the older generation influence the younger generation a lot. They have brought them up and taught them to hate the other family. As the story takes place around mainly young men they have not yet made up their own mind. It is like they are almost slaves to the older generation. I think it is unfair to try and pass blame of violence onto young men in generally because not all young men are like this as is shown by Benvolio as he tried to break up the fight in Act1 Scene 1 Part, foolà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ and also in Act 3 scene 1: Benvolio: we talk here in the public haunt of men: .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc , .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .postImageUrl , .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc , .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc:hover , .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc:visited , .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc:active { border:0!important; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc:active , .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ucd550967f77196ea0ee035f269a06ffc:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Streams Of Silver By Ra Salvatore EssayEither withdraw unto some private place, Or reason coldly of your grievances, Or else depart; here all eyes gaze on us. So this generally statement is not true for all young men as some are peacefully. However though some are not. This also proves he that he is not comfortable with violence and generally wants peace. The prince also puts a great deal of trust in him because he always seems to tell the truth: Benvolio: O noble prince, I can discover all The unlucky manage of this fatal brawl There lies the man, slain by young Romeo That slew thy kingsman, brave Mercutio. Act 3 scene 1 This is Benvolio either being honest or being a grass and trying to wriggle out of any punishment that may be brought on his fellow comrades. My opinion is that he is just being honest and trying to be peaceful and admitting to this tragedy of death. Gregory and Sampson do like to causing trouble almost as if to impress the older generation or to impress Romeo and Mercutio. But amongst themselves it sounds like they have a lot of hate inside with no good reason, such as they like to discuss the raping of women: Sampson:à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦.. I will take The wall of any man or maid of the Montagues Act 1 Scene 1 In other words they want to rape the women against the wall or kill the men against the wall. This talk about sex fuels violence and makes them even more so that bit aggressive. I think the older generation are most to blame for the violence because of their influence on the young men. The young men are a lot more easily influenced than young women and it is mainly then men that have the quarrel with each other. Tybalt is also to blame for the violence in Verona as he provokes Romeo a lot of the time. However as Romeo is all romantic he has no real interest in fighting and does his best to shrug it off.
